Screen VS Print: Why digital is only half of the picture.

It’s not just that your clients and potential customers can physically handle and interact with printed 2D and 3D products, you’ll also find that the colours are brighter and more accurate as they’re not being ‘translated’ by hundreds of different screen types with different specifications.

ADDING VALUE

Digital products can be designed to be visually stunning, interactive and are quickly accessible and easily sent—popping up on screens around the globe in mere seconds. Having said this, organisations are seeing an increasing value in print.

Research has shown that we spend more time reading printed words compared to those we see on screens, perhaps because we’re so used to scrolling up and down, and skimming over pop-up ads and distracting banners to give our full attention to digital content. It has also been found that readers retain and can recall physically printed information better.

And back to the physical, tactile nature of print: the paper or card we choose on which to print brochures, flyers and sales collateral adds an additional layer of meaning to the product. The weight, the glossiness, the texture… these are all things that can be used to enhance branding and encourage the reader to delve inside.

UNIT PRINT AND DIGITAL

The message from expert marketers is clear: organisations should be using printed promotional materials alongside digital ones. It’s not really a case of one versus the other.

As digital technologies continue to changes and develop, there are increasing ways in which we can link from them into the material realm—the real world. And this kind of interaction is a real draw for people.

It goes without saying that print products and online should be integrated and should complement your businesses wider marketing strategy by linking back to key online content and messages. Consider using short URL’s or dedicated domains in your printed materials that redirect to key pages on your site for this.

If you really want to stay ahead of the game, consider incorporating augmented reality triggers into your printed marketing materials. Your customers could suddenly see your products come alive on their phones or tablets.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TREES?

True, environmental concerns are much higher up the agenda than they used to be. However, most people know that paper can be sourced sustainably - be sure to look out for the Forest Stewardship Council logo.
